Chapter 2.4 - Paired Reading

Because each individual has a different way of learning or mastering a technique, it is only fitting that there should be different ways in which one can enhance his reading rate. For many learners, paired reading is an excellent method of increasing reading accuracy, comprehension, and reading rate. This strategy involves the working of two individuals, one a proficient reader and the other a non-proficient. Each person is given a text to examine and read, and both are required to read it at the same time. For the sake of the non-proficient learner, the proficient reader reads at the same speed as the non-proficient. At times, the non-proficient learner can tap the proficient reader, indicating that she would like to read alone. Over time, the proficient reader will join again in the paired reading, especially if the non-proficient runs into problems with the text repeatedly.

The success of this technique is manifold. For one, any difficulties presented in the text are immediately addressed and corrected because the proficient reader will read correctly. For the non-proficient learner, this will instantaneously assist her in knowing what the accurate pronunciation of a word is, for example. Secondly, this activity works well for a proficient learner as he too is able to improve his reading rate.

For this next activity, try to find a person with which to partner. As with the other assignments, you will need a stopwatch or other timer in order to record the rate at which you both are able to read the text. Ideally, you will want to work with someone who is more proficient in reading than you are. This is not to embarrass or humiliate you, but rather to provide you with reading support. Remember, the purpose of this method is to help eliminate potential reading errors, especially because the proficient learner is already familiar with this type of vocabulary. Should you find yourself willing to read aloud on your own, feel free to tap the other reader. But keep in mind that if you happen to stumble upon words, the proficient reader will jump back in the activity. Once you both have gone through the passage once, record the time it took to complete it. As an added incentive to improving your reading speed, perform a second and even a third read of the following text, including reading with your partner. You may even want to use a meta-guiding device as a supplement to the activity. Once you have completed the following readings, analyze the difference in rates.

Old Greek Stories by James Baldwin

Perhaps no other stories have ever been told so often or listened to with so much pleasure as the classic tales of ancient Greece. For many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would.
